AMAZON BURNS

During the Amazonian summer, farmers, prospectors and land grabbers promoted an unprecedented volume of forest fires in the Amazon, following the pronouncements and policies of President Jair Bolsonaro's government increasing impunity against environmental criminals. The area devastated by the fires in 2019 was 46% larger than in 2018, a record since the fires began to be observed by satellite, while the number of fines imposed by Ibama (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) was the lowest in 15 years. Special coverage for the Portuguese newspaper Expresso.
